H.A. BROWN LIBRARY
At H.A. Brown Elementary, our all-volunteer library brings the joy of reading to every student—offering a vibrant, inclusive space filled with thousands of books, community spirit, and a shared love for learning.
Our library’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and community. When budget cuts eliminated school librarians across Philadelphia, H.A. Brown families and neighbors stepped up to keep the love of reading alive. What began as a grassroots effort to keep the doors open has grown into a thriving, student-centered library that reflects the heart of our school community.
-
In the early 2000s, H.A. Brown lost its certified librarian due to citywide budget cuts—but our community refused to lose the library itself. Teachers kept books circulating through classroom libraries, and volunteers stepped in to keep the library doors open. Parents and neighbors read stories aloud, helped students find their next favorite book, and checked materials out using handwritten library cards. What could have been a loss became the beginning of something remarkable—a volunteer-led effort that preserved a vital space for imagination and learning.
-
As the years went on, our volunteers recognized that our collection needed new life to truly inspire readers. With support from WEPAC and a $20,000 Keystone Communities Grant secured with the help of Rep. Mary Isaacson, we undertook a massive transformation—reviewing more than 8,000 books, updating the catalog to a digital system, and reimagining the space entirely. Outdated titles were replaced with over 4,000 new, diverse books that reflect our students’ experiences and interests, complemented by a beautiful mural from local artist Paula Rivera. The library reopened in 2023, brighter and more welcoming than ever.
-
Today, the H.A. Brown Library thrives thanks to the dedication of volunteers who give their time, energy, and love to keep it running. From staffing weekly class visits to securing book donations and grants, our parents and community partners continue to make this space possible. Every shelf, story, and smile reflects a shared belief—that access to books and a beautiful place to discover them is something every child deserves.
